CAPE TOWN – Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus of the World Health Organization (WHO) says he is pleased with the progress being made at Cape Town’s vaccine manufacturing facilities.

He concluded the second day of his visit to the local facilities on Saturday.

The Pinelands BioVac site was officially opened in 2003 and joined the fight against the coronavirus in 2020.

By 2024, with Afrigen, the company hoped to start developing the COVID vaccines.

Ghebreyesus believes South Africa is on its way to becoming a leader in the field of immunization.

“We developed this hub which could be a strategic solution to the problems we are facing,” he said.

Joined by representatives of the Belgian government, Ghebreyesus stressed the importance of cooperative collaboration in the fight against the pandemic.
