A Frankenmuth flour mill purchased an Isabella County flour mill and the four facilities it owns.

Star of the West Milling Co. announced its purchase of Brown Milling Co. in a press release dated January 17.

“This acquisition strengthens Star of the West’s key capabilities while expanding our presence in our home country,” said Jim Howe, president and CEO of Star of the West Milling Company, in the press release. “Brown Milling and Star of the West have a lot in common, starting with a commitment to Michigan farmers and to our employees. Today’s announcement allows Star of the West to continue the world-class service that Brown Milling Co. is known for in central Michigan.

The purchase includes four Brown-owned facilities: Brown Milling Co., 8731 E. Rosebush Road; Superior Fertilizer, 3761 E. Weidman Road; Rosebush Feed & Grain, 3751 E. Rosebush Road; and the Shepherd Elevator, 414 W. Wright Ave.

“After 56 years of service to Michigan agriculture and careful consideration by the Brown family, we have decided to place Brown Milling, Inc. in the hands of another long-time Michigan company, Star of the West Milling Company,” Ron Brown, president of Brown Milling, Inc., said in the press release. “Both of our companies have served our respective customers and employees with pride, and this game will drive Central Michigan agriculture forward.”

A local agriculture official said the purchase was a good decision.

“I think it’s a perfect fit,” said county extension service manager Paul Gross. “Star of the West is a Michigan-based company with an excellent reputation in grain handling, marketing and agronomy. I’m pretty sure the Brown family has done their homework to ensure that their employees will be treated fairly and provide good service to their customers. I believe Star of the West will continue to grow the business and make additional investments in the community.

Brown Milling was founded in 1965 in the Denver Township community of Delwin after Ed Brown purchased a mobile food milling service. It expanded into a fertilizer company in 1970, according to the Start of the West press release. The company purchased Rosebush Feed & Grain in 1983, Superior Fertilizer in 1987 and Shepherd Elevator in 1991.

Star of the West was founded 151 years ago as a unique flour mill. It has since expanded to five factories in four states, including Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and New York.
