Amazon will build the 2nd factory in Fayetteville and create more than 500 jobs


FAYETTEVILLE- Amazon plans to build a 1.3 million square foot fulfillment facility in Fayetteville’s Military Business Park, which could employ more than 500 full-time jobs and hundreds more part-time positions.

The news was announced this morning and shared with WRAL TechWire by Fayetteville Cumberland Economic Development Corp. (FCEDC).

The new facility is expected to open in 2023 and will be located on 94 acres of land. According to a statement, the facility will receive the products and process them through the company’s distribution network, preparing the products for shipment and delivery to its customers.

In May 2021, Amazon announced another project in Cumberland County, as reported by WRAL TechWire.

A complement

This facility will “complement” the new distribution center, according to a statement.

The City of Fayetteville and Cumberland County have each approved up to $1.25 million in incentives, which the company will only receive if it meets certain employment and investment goals. The funding is intended to help with certain infrastructure improvements, according to the release.

“Amazon is excited to expand its operations in Cumberland County, North Carolina by investing in a new fulfillment center in Fayetteville,” Amazon spokeswoman Nikki Forman said in a statement. “We are committed to providing efficient delivery to customers and creating hundreds of jobs for the region’s talented workforce.”

Expanding Amazon

After the onset of the global coronavirus pandemic, e-commerce sales increased. the most recent datafrom the third quarter of 2021, from the Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce found that 13% of all retail sales during the quarter were made through an e-commerce channel.

Last year, Amazon also announced two facilities in the Triangle and a fulfillment center in Smithfield where hundreds of jobs are also expected to be created.

“This installation of Amazon in the military activity park means hundreds of new jobs for our county, as well as economic growth and advancement. This transformative investment is a major win for our community,” said County Commission Chairman Glenn Adams, who added that the project has an “aggressive timeline.”

The Fayetteville Cumberland County Economic Development Corporation’s statement noted that Amazon was swayed in its decision because of the county’s strong workforce and job market, which is bolstered by the approximately 7,000 military personnel passing through. each year from military to civilian roles.
