The success of the ABP Newport Wales Marathon means that the iconic event, which is Wales’ largest 26.2 mile race, will remain in the city. He will return for 2022 on Sunday 23 October.

As with the London Marathon, the event will switch to the fall season for just one year in 2022 before returning to its usual spring time slot in April 2023.

Run 4 Wales (R4W) organizers and Newport City Council initially signed a three-year deal that covered events taking place in 2018, 2019 and 2021, a year behind the last edition in due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The overwhelmingly positive response to the event and the benefits it has brought to the city means its future is now sealed.

Title partner Associated British Ports (ABP), which was instrumental in establishing the race with Newport City Council and the Welsh government, has also pledged renewed support.

Those who want to get in on the action next year can now list their space at a fraction of the price. An introductory entry offer will be available from today through January 8 offering spaces for just £ 39 (a saving of £ 10). Runners will also be able to sign up to run for main charity partner NSPCC for just £ 5, pledging to raise £ 300 to help their fight for every childhood in Wales.

The ABP Newport Wales 10K will also be back as part of the event with entries on sale along with other events in the Healthspan Wales 10K series this Friday, December 10th. The Healthspan Wales 10K series is delivered by R4W and includes races in Cardiff Bay, Porthcawl and Barry Island.

R4W CEO Matt Newman commented:

“We are delighted that the ABP Newport Wales Marathon will continue beyond the initial three years agreed to with Newport City Council. We must have been patient for the past 18 months, but the third edition of the event was certainly worth the wait. We look forward to building on the reputation of the race as it continues to grow and we urge anyone interested in getting involved and supporting the race next year to register.

Simon Brown, Divisional Port Manager of Wales for ABP added:

“We are proud to return as Title Partner for the Newport Wales 10K and Marathon in 2022. Running is more than just a running event, but a real community opportunity, and in areas where so much of our employees and customers live and work.

Councilor Jane Mudd, Head of Newport City Council, said:

“I am delighted that with the support of City Council, Newport continues to host the Marathon and 10K.

“The event has proven to be very popular since its inception in 2018, bringing many economic benefits to the city and upholding our reputation for hosting major events.

“It’s a fantastic wellness day that is creating a real buzz in the city, and we are delighted to see her return next year.”
